News Blog Week 7

Las Vegas is a beautiful place already but I read on Yahoo that it will have something new added to its strip soon. There are plans in the making for a huge Ferris wheel that overlooks the strip and shows off how truly amazing the city is. The giant wheel is to be 500 feet tall, which would make it the third largest in the world and the largest on the Western Hemisphere. A developer won permission to construct the Ferris wheel as the centerpiece of an amusement park and retail center planned for a vacant plot of land on the strip. Five hundred feet is the maximum height that the wheel can be due to restrictions from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration. The site is less than half a mile from the McCarran International Airport, where more than 35 million passengers land every year. The idea for the Ferris wheel is to offer the public “a very unique view of the Las Vegas Strip.” The financial backers of the project have not yet been disclosed but the hopes are to have it built in 18 months to 24 months.
To put its immense height in perspective the tallest Ferris wheel is the 541 foot Singapore flyer, it is followed by the 525 foot Star of Nanchang in China. Then the London Eye, that is by the banks of the Thames River, reaches 443 feet. This would put the London Eye in fourth place.
I could not imagine seeing Las Vegas from a giant Ferris wheel. I have been there on a plane and took off from their airport and that is about as much of Vegas that I have seen. If I was flying in that close to a big obstruction I might be a little worried but I guess the Aviation Administration has that covered.
